As businesses increasingly rely on digital solutions, the demand for app-building platforms is set to rise significantly in the coming years. Business owners aspire to harness the power of custom apps to enhance their operations.

Creating a dashboard that streamlines the process of building and managing apps would empower business owners to focus more on their core activities and less on technical details.

Crowdbotics is an app builder that provides a solution to this challenge.

Perfecting the Management

In 2015, using Crowdbotics to swiftly deploy an app felt revolutionary. However, by early 2021, the magic receded because of an influx of users and the necessity for UX improvements, as the old UX caused confusion and a sense of limited control among users.

I was part of this ambitious project by redesigning and transforming its UX.

Design by Accretion

Since then, due to in-depth user research, the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning, and intense market competition, Crowdbotics has undergone significant changes in its UI and UX.

User Stories

First of all, to better understand the information of each parts and the navigation should include, I’ve mapped out the user stories of each typical user scenario.

User Scenario 1: As a PM on Crowdbotics, I want to easily manage & check the development status of ongoing projects in order to keep stakeholders informed and ensure we stay on track with our deadlines.

(The other 11 user scenarios include for first time users, developers, designers, clients, business analysts, QA testers and etc.)

The dashboard is the main entry point to the app and I believe has two main goals:

  • Informational (providing an overview of project) and
  • Navigational (providing quick access to the app’s main areas and actions).

I believe the informational goal could be achieved by fillling the needs we discovered earlier:

How is my project doing fnancially?
-Providing fnancial status.

How should I plan my future work?
-Providing projects’ status.

What can I do now to move it forward?
-Suggested action items.

Kickoff

Picking up the pieces

At the outset of the project we didn’t have a clear mission or specific goals for the project management experience. Without existing insights, I partnered with our PM to explore how users were keeping things on track. We conducted user testings and interviews.

We tested the existing dashboard’s PRD(product reqirement doument) UX with 10 participants online. Our goals were to understand the challenges developers, PMs, designers and other users faced and the workarounds they employed. I have identified that the primary issues with the product as complexity, confusion, ambiguity, and poor user engagement.

Deeper Insights

Breaking down the issues step by step

To systematically address these issues, we conducted user testing for each identified issue category, resulting in more detailed descriptions and insights into more specific problems.
The Launch

From Inefficient to Optimized / Ambiguous to Explicit

In the 6 months after my involvement on the project, the team continued to evolve and polish the UX & visual design, as well as finesse the finer functional details as the app was being built. Although I was not part of this process, it was great to see most of my work brought to life.
